Research into the use of various wastes as potential road material is continually advancing. In Europe, the US and Canada many highway agencies, private organsations, and individuals have completed or are in the process of completing a wide variety of studies and research projects on the feasibility, environmental suitability and performance of using recycled products in highway construction. These studies try to match society's need for safe and economic disposal of waste materials with the highway industry's need for better and more cost-effective construction materials. Some research has been done in India to determine the availability of feasible waste materials and the suitability of these materials for Indian roads. Yet the use of wastes would benefit the road industry by providing it with a cheap source of material and, in some cases, road construction companies may be able to charge a fee for suitably using waste materials that would otherwise require expensive treatment for disposal. This paper describes some of the typical chemical and physical characteristics of slags, their hydraulic or self stabilisation characteristics, the laboratory investigations which have been carried out to evaluate the suitability of these solid by-products obtained from Indian steel plants in base or subbase layer of a road pavement, and some case studies of test tracks, constructed using waste materials.
