Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRPs), a relatively new range of engineering materials has found substantial potential in the construction industry. Their tailor-made properties combined with high strength to weight ratio make them materials of the 21~(st) century. The potential lying in applications of FRPs has been realized, the academia and industry have put concerted efforts in order to bring these materials to the consumer level. The present study is an attempt to highlight the benefits associated with the use of FRPs, the impediments resulting in their limited development and potential areas of application. A design and selection methodology has been put that aid in better understanding of the underlying principles in the context of the FRPs.
