This paper throws light on polymers and their significance in the field of civil engineering. Polymers are now well established alongside metals and ceramics as one of the major classes of manufactured materials. Polymer materials like Hydrocarbon Polymers, other carbon chain polymers, Heterochain polymers, Network Polymers and Copolymers are described in this paper. The advantages of polymers Impegranated concrete, silicone elastomers curing , cellular polymers are discussed. Structural plastics and composites, usage of polymers for water mains, polymer membranes like geotextiles, polymers concretes and usage of polymers for expansion Bearings and Resilient mountings, chemical grouting for soils are highlighted. Finally, the density, mechanical behaviour of polymers, tensile modulus and compliance of thermoplastics permeability, fire behaviour, biological attack and toxicity are discussed in this paper.
