The single tow strand composites were prepared from PAN based UT-500 high strength carbon fibre and pitch based XN-70A high modulus carbonf ibre with aminobismaleimide resin as matrix precursor. The composites were heat treated ranging from 600 deg C to 3000 deg C under inert atmosphere at the interval 400 deg C. The resultant composites were characterised for tensile properties and crystalline parameters. The tensile strength of high strength carbon fibre composites increases with heat treatment temperature of composites upto 2200 deg C, and above it decreases upto 3000 deg C, whereas the tensile strength of high modulus carbon fibre composites decreases with heat treatment temperature upto 1800 deg C above it increases upto 3000 deg C. The value of crystlaline parameter changes with heat treatment temperature of composites, i.e., d-spacing decreases and crystallite size increases continuously with heat treatment temperature of composites up to 3000 deg C.
