Objective: To study the effect of electro-acupuncture (EA) on latencies and amplitudes of the waves of MLR (middle latency response) and the relationship between the changes of latencies and amplitudes and those of the recovery time of MLR. Methods: EA was administered respectively on acupuncture points on auricular region, forelimb and hind limb, and MLR evoked by clicks were recorded in the center of the auditory cortex in anaesthetized guinea pigs. Results: EA of points on auricular region and forelimb mainly induced shortening of the recovery time of MLR, while points on hind limb mainly lengthening. The changes of the recovery time were consistent with the changes of latencies. In three groups of different points of EA, when the latencies were shortened, the amplitudes decreased, and when the latencies were lengthened, the amplitudes in auricular region and forelimb groups also decreased, whereas the amplitudes in hind limb group increased. Conclusion: EA of different points had different effects on MLR. The recovery time of evoked response can be also used to indicate the excitability of the auditory cortex as the latency.
