A novel push-pull quinoid dye [(4-benzo-l,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-quinocyanocarboxymethylene (BDTQCC)] was synthesized as a photosensitizer for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). BDTQCC has a broad absorption band between 450 nm and 700 nm derived from the π-π~* transition with a charge transfer character. The DSSC using BDTQCC gives incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of up to 52.1% at 570 nm. Photoelectric conversion in the near-infrared region was confirmed.
