Video quality and Bit Rates in Thematic television Channels

摘要

The technical feasibility of new digital services has been demonstrated, but questions still remain over their acceptability by the viewer in terms of their technical and non-technical performance parameters. one of the most important technical parameters is the service bit-rate used, which determines the picture quality of delivered services. The service bit-rate also has a storng influence on the non-technica parameter: the cost of the service. Experiments at the RAI Research Centre have been made to investigate how material from a particular program category: Sport, Movies etc., can be encoded efficiently and economically in terms allocated bit-rate. These experiments were based on subjective assessment measurements performed usign a sepcially adapted version of the new SSCQE methodology, and using viewer quetionnaires. This paper gives an overview of the experiments made and provides results of subjective assessments performed on a total of 240 different observers.
