Part 1 of this article describes high-resolution Direct Numerical Simu-lations (DNS) of gravity and turbidity currents, with an emphasis on the structure,Lagrangian dynamics and energy budget of the flow. In part 2, we review a novel approach for modeling stratified flows based on vorticity, which avoids many of the empirical assumptions required by earlier modeling efforts.
