Although dye effluents are treated in activated sludge systems, most synthetic dyes are recalcitrant to biodegradation [1,2], thereby creating an aesthetic problem in receiving waters. Attempts to develop biological methods to decolourise these effluents have been unsuccessful [3]. Expensive chemical or physical steps prior to aerobic biological treatment are currently the most common treatment methods[3,4].
