Triclosan (TCS) is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent that is widely used in personal-care products and it has been commonly detected in wastewater samples. Beside this fact, data on its toxicity in activated sludge process are scarce and they are mainly based on the use of short-term biological screening tests [1]. Regarding its fate in activated sludge process, monitoring data from wastewater treatment systems have shown that TCS is significantly removed. However, the role of biodegradation and sorption on the observed removal has not been clarified yet [2, 3]. The objective of this work was to study TCS behaviour and toxicity in activated sludge systems and to investigate the role of biodegradation and sorption on its removal.
