Hardly a day goes by anymore without hearing about a cyber security event inrnthe news. In this paper/session, we will analyze the risk associated with smart devices,rncalibration, and maintenance that could compromise the cyber security status ofrnoperations and possibly our entire companies.rnAs a nuclear power plant operator and electronic technician, we never considered thernsecurity risk of having an instrument calibrated by a third party. Today however, thingsrnhave changed significantly and it is common to find microprocessors in virtuallyrneverything including the instruments we are using in our plants. The microprocessor hasrnmade significant impacts in performance and communications and consequently might bernweakening your organization's security.rnAnalysis presented will discuss the real risk associated with different types ofrninstrumentation and devices, network topologies, and technologies used in smart devicesrnand systems. Additionally, we will analyze the possible effects on safety systems andrnhow to compensate for them and how to protect your systems.
