1. NSC Acquired Necessary Fabrics and Insulation Materials: (D2210 Diaplex fabric laminates, and Reflex-Tex Heat Reflective Insulations.) 2. More than 14 Different Fabric Configurations were identified and tested for: (1) Dynamic Moisture Vapor Permeation (ASTM F 2298 - 03, Method A) (2) Hydrostatic Resistance (3) Textile Performances/Characteristics (various test methods) (4) Effective Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Resistance (ASTM C-518) (5) Water Vapor Resistance Thermal Resistance (ISO 11092). 3. Data Generated and Analyzed: (1) A 0.04 cm (16 mil) thick Diaplex SMP fabric/Reflex-Tex insulative batting would allow a light working diver (176 Watts) to operate in a 65℉ water for 2 hrs, and 1/2hr in a 55℉water environment. (2) A 0.23 cm (90 mil) thick Diaplex SMP (Tg 32oF) fabric/Maiden Mills Regulator insulative fleece batting would allow a light working diver (176 watts) to operate in a 65℉water for more than 10 hrs, and 2 hrs in a 55℉water environment. 4. Diaplex fabrics (Tg: 32℉, 50℉, & 65℉) were tested for the effects of varying temperatures on their water vapor transport properties. 5. Diaplex fabric with Tg 32 ℉ was found suitable for use in the development of an amphibian suit. 6. Thermal and water vapor resistance testing of a leading commercial waterproof/moisture vapor permeable fabric, a wet suit, and a dry suit fabrics were tested as control fabrics. 7. A prototype dry suit and three liner insulation undergarments were produced and tested on the thermal manikin at the Naval Academy and ARIEM. 8. Physiological testing @ NEDU/CSS has been conducted using the Amphibian Suit Gen Ⅱ(a dry suit without integrated gloves and socks). 9. Amphibian Suit Gen Ⅱ demonstrated the effects of increased water vapor transmission by a more effective maintenance of rectal temperature as compared to the control current operational suits (i.e., flame retardant anti exposure suit, and the wet suit.) 10. As a result, it appears that the Diaplex Shape Memory Polymer membrane has demonstrated the capability to provide greater heat dissipation during the periods of increased metabolic heat production as compared to the current operational suits. 11.
