IEEE 802.11 a/b WLAN networks are being widely deployed inEnterprise Intranets (in most cases outside the DMZ) and publicareas such as airports, coffee shops, convention centers andshopping malls. This combined with the availability of multimodenetworked devices and applications that can take advantageof continuous mobility and constant reachability, is drivingthe need for Mobile IPv4 across these networks. Many of theseWLAN networks employ NAT to translate between non-routable androutable IP addresses. To access protected Enterprise networks,an IPsec-based VPN solution is preferred in conjunction withMobile IP. This draft proposes a solution framework thatenables efficient, seamless operation of Mobile IPv4 whencombined with an IPsec-based VPN and supporting NAT traversal when needed. The solution has no link layer dependencies andcan be applied to other 802.3-compatible wired and wirelessphysical media as well.
