Software Defined Last Mile Networks (SD-LMN) is a novel approach to build IoT applications. The holistic concept combines virtualisation and network simulation to develop mature network applications, installable on physically deployable devices. Use of SDLMN facilitates easier understanding of network artefacts and study scalability aspects of large-scale network application deployment without the need to setup large physical networks. This paper details each building block of SD-LMN: device function virtualization, network medium simulation and physical network devices. The concept is realized for G3-PLC, a narrowband powerline communication standard which provides IPv6 connectivity over powerline. The practical realization for G3-PLC shows different design aspects and highlights the benefits of SD-LMN.
