Non-binary trellis codes on the synthetic statistical MIMO power line channel

Issues of reliability, speed and large data transfer are an ongoing challenge in power line communications (PLC) due to the negative effects of mains cables that were not designed for communication services. In order, to enhance the PLC bit error rate performance, non-binary convolutional and turbo codes are proposed and evaluated on the synthetic statistical MIMO PLC channel. Non-binary codes are shown to be robust to burst errors and the addition of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with non-linear preprocessing techniques, such as blanking, and clipping, have been utilized to eliminate the impulsive noise effects. We compare the proposed non-binary coded systems with comparable binary convolutional and turbo coded systems for 2× 2 and 2 × 3 MIMO PLC channels and various values of impulsive index and noise ratio. Significant coding gains are observed for the non-binary systems and show the advantages of employing non-binary codes on PLC channels.
