Performance enhancement of Restricted Access Window mechanism based on fuzzy logic for IoT networks

IEEE 802.11ah enables the Internet of Things (IoT) applications because of its extended coverage, high throughput and large scalability. It reduces contention, energy consumption and hidden terminals in the network by implementing restricted access window (RAW) mechanism. The RAW mechanism groups the devices and spreads the contention across various RAW slots. One of the major challenges in RAW mechanism is to choose the optimal number of RAW slots (ORS). In this article, we find the ORS by using fuzzy logic. Further, we analytically evaluate the throughput and energy consumption of RAW mechanism. Results show that the throughput is significantly improved and the energy consumption is decreased by choosing the ORS. Finally, the analytical finding are corroborated using ns-3 simulations.
