LV Monitoring and Awareness in Practice: Electricity Consumption and Price Time Series Similarity Analysis Using FFT

This paper investigates measuring similarities between the price and the consumption time series to analyze condition of distribution feeders. This is realized by applying fast Fourier transform (FFT) to the price and consumption time series, and measuring the similarities between the output frequency patterns of these time series. Indeed, changes in consumption patterns caused by customers, considering the price signals are traceable, using these distances. As the customers are distributed in different feeders, proper measurement of the correlation between the consumption and the price trends is an important issue to analyze distribution feeders’ condition from consumption patterns point of view. Information about the different consumption patterns involved in a feeder is useful in analyzing different feeders’ role in load balancing in the distribution network. Efficient ringing of the feeders is an important point in the case of distribution feeders’ automation. In other words, information about the role of the specified feeder on load balancing via automation of the distribution feeders in the network. Thus, consumption time series corresponding to customers with different consumption behaviors are clustered. Then, the FFT of these cluster centers and the price time series are calculated and compared. The proposed procedure is applied on a test distribution system data, and the results presented, which confirm the practicality of the proposed method in analyzing similarity between the consumption patterns and the electricity price signals.
