Location Spoofing Detection Enhancement through RSSI Inferred Movement Analysis

Positioning systems have been widely adopted from the onset of mobile device technology. Almost all mobile devices today have positioning systems that provide the location of the device. However, positioning systems that rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) data and Cellular Network Positioning (CNP) data can be manipulated by spoofing the data. Numerous solutions exist that can discriminate between legitimate and spoofed location signals. Some of these solutions use the Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) to perform location spoofing detection. Solutions based on INS rely on absolute measurements from device hardware sensors and are thus vulnerable to intentional spoofing. This paper proposes using side-channel information in the form of cellular Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values as a mechanism to detect location spoofing. The experiments shown in the paper provide some insights on characteristics of RSSI derivatives and their possible use in detection of location spoofing.
