A Holistic Approach to Green Stormwater Infrastructure Maintenance

The City of Kansas City, Missouri's Smart Sewer Program and the City's Water Services Department (KC Water) have adopted a "holistic" approach to maintaining green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) sites within the combined sewer area to help address the challenge of optimizing GSI maintenance in a relatively new market. This is being achieved by utilizing multiple service provider types, "learning by doing" on a small scale and then strategically expanding successful initiatives and planning for the long-term by including a workforce development program. The Kansas City metropolitan region is a relatively new market for GSI that is approximately thirteen years old. It has taken significant work by many parties to reach the GSI awareness level that exists in the region today, yet there is still work to be done. Many design professionals, contractors, and City staff working on City infrastructure projects are aware of GSI concepts, however, there are others that do not have first-hand experience with this technology or, an appreciation for its potential to help solve some of the water resource management challenges in Kansas City.
