Study on ferritic stainless steel and its application on architecture structure

Ferritic Stainless Steels (FSS) are nickel-saving, corrosion-resistant, lowcost steels. In this paper the feasibility of applying ferritic stainless steels on architecture structural fields is studied. Three typical ferritic stainless steels with 12%, 16% and 22% chromium content are chosen, and comparison of properties for these steels was made by performing physical testing, mechanical testing, corrosion resistance testing and welding experiment. The results show that FSS has not only excellent corrosion resistance but also good mechanical and physical properties. But following the increase of Cr, FSS exhibits a worse impact toughness in despite of a better corrosion resistance. Controlling a lower carbon, nitrogen and adding some stabilized elements titanium or niobium helps to improve the impact toughness, and other general properties are also developed to some extent. The impact toughness is also influenced by the thickness of the material, so the thickness should be limited to less than 4mm for high chromium ferritic stainless steel on structural applications.
