The study is about the computation of the coefficient named as “shear wall participation factor” on different RC walled systems. It is defined as the ratio of the base moment carried by the structural walls over the total overturning moment and it is a key factor to select the ‘structural behavior factor’ R. In order to investigate the contribution of coupling beams to this factor, some numerical solutions have been carried out at different multi-story reinforced concrete buildings, having solid shear walls, framed and shear walled systems and coupled walled systems. First, symmetrical systems without torsion are selected then some walls are shifted to the interior axis to create some torsion in order to see its effect on computations. Secondly, the new definition of “shear wall participation factor” introduced in 2007 Turkish Earthquake Code based on the ratio of the base shear instead of base moment is discussed and obtained R values with these two definitions are compared.
