Advanced Segmental Precast/Prefabrication Technology and Its Application in Bridge Engineering

Bridges as one of the core infrastructure elements, play an essential role in the development of the national transportation network of high-speedrailway, expressway, metropolitan subway or light rail systems. In the 21st century, decisions on design and construction method of major bridge engineering projects (especially for the high speed railway lines) demands systematic consideration that accommodates many often contradicting project boundary conditions. Some of the key project boundary conditions include (not limited to): transportation function, safety, durability, static investment, dynamic investment, speedy construction, environmental consideration, aesthetic function of bridges, etc. In the past several decades, bridge designers and builders have advanced the segmental precast and prefabrication technology to a new height that could provides a solid technical platform for decision makers in the major transportation fields. This paper briefly describes these advanced precast/prefabrication technology and some of their prominent application around the world.
