Rail is superior to Road and Air transportation in environmental and energy terms. High speed trains can substitute for intercity motoring and short-haul flights. To make HSR and Aviation complementary, major airports must be linked to the HSR network and the airport rail station must be located under a midfield terminal. An airport HSR station should enable quick train - airplane transfers, easy train changing and free access for passengers from nearby suburban areas. Depending on scheduled train speeds, the catchment area of such an airport can reach 1000 km, thus eliminating most feeder flights. Overnight high speed trains could compete with airplanes on distances of up to 3000 km. A future transcontinental HSR network should cover Asia, Europe and North Africa.
