ROAD-LIGHTING RESEARCH OVER THE PAST 80 YEARS; WHAT LESSONS CAN WE TAKE WITH US INTO THE NEXT MILLENNIUM?

This paper describes the more original approaches adopted to road-lighting research over the past 80 years. Some of the former research has never been used. It has, in fact, been forgotten, but might well prove helpful in setting up a programme for the next millennium. Suggestions in this direction are given.
