Atomic force microscopy techniques were used to quantify the adsorption of fibrinogen onto electrically polarized 316L stainless steel. Marked reduction in fibrinogen adsorption at cathodic potentials and evidence of multilayer formation at anodic potentials between 300-700 mV (vs. Ag/AgCI) was observed using ex situ techniques. Reduction in the kinetics of fibrinogen adsorption was observed at cathodic potentials using an in situ technique.
