The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the US Navy's experience with using the Orbis method for static source error testing. Traditional static source error test methods, such as tower fly-bys and using a trailing cone, require facilities that are not always available, or instrumentation that may not be cost-effective. The Orbis method has the advantage of using GPS (Global Positioning System) data to estimate the aircraft's true airspeed which can then be used to determine the aircraft's altitude error. This paper highlights lessons learned which include: types of aircraft suitable for Orbis method, analysis techniques, and various sources of error.
