This paper discusses the development, function, and implementation of various data analysis techniques used in the F-16 Automatic Ground and Air Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto GCAS and Auto ACAS). Auto GCAS and Auto ACAS are designed to prevent controlled flight into terrain and mid-air mishaps, respectively. These systems differ from previous ground and mid-air warning systems in that they require neither pilot action nor consent for the system to take control of the aircraft and perform an evasive maneuver. The testing of both systems required assessing collision avoidance performance while never actually relying on the system under test, necessitating the need for unique flight test methods and the creation of new analysis techniques. Though Auto GCAS and Auto ACAS are similar automatic systems designed to prevent collisions by executing a planned trajectory, different analysis techniques are used to gauge system performance. Details on the trajectory prediction error calculation, collision avoidance performance analysis, and nuisance evaluation are given for each system.
