Fuel reformation of military jet fuels was studied for hydrogen production for fuel cell applications. Jet fuel samples were analyzed for total sulfur content, and individual organic sulfur compounds were identified. The total sulfur content of the fuels ranged from 350 to 860 ppm S depending on the fuel batches. The majority of the sulfur compounds are 2,3-dimethylbenzothiophene and 2,3,7-trimethylbenzothiophene. These jet fuels were converted to hydrogen by fuel reformation. The Rh-based catalyst showed the ability to reform JP-8 with > 800 ppmS. The reformer could handle shutdowns and restarts. It was found that dehydrogenation was enhanced as the catalyst deactivated with time.
