Compressibility Characteristics of a Nanostructured 7075 Al Alloy Powder Produced by High-Energy Milling

The objective of this work was to study the compressibility characteristics of a nanostructured 7075 Al alloy powder. To this end, the mentioned powder, which had previously been produced by the high-energy milling of a premixed Al-Zn-Mg-Cu powder (Alumix 431D), was uniaxially cold pressed into cylindrical compacts with diameters of 10 mm using compaction pressures ranging from 100 to 600 MPa. Furthermore, two different contents of Atomized Acrawax C (mean particle size 6 urn), namely, 0.75 wt% and 1.5 wt%, were employed to study the effects of this pressing lubricant on the compressibility of the powder. The compressibility data obtained for the nanostructured 7075 alloy powder was compared to those previously obtained for the Alumix 431D powder. Also, the densification data was fitted to the three general and widely quoted compaction equations proposed by Heckel, Panelli and Ambrosio, and Ge, to find the equation which fit the experimental data best and to quantify the compaction behavior and the plastic deformation capacity of the nanostructured 7075 powder.
