Microgrid management system is a way to effectively control the high penetration of distributed energy resources in the utility grids. The strategy proposes to manage the local energy production, increase renewable energy usage to reduce fuel base generation consumption, and consider demand shedding under peak demand period for both grid-connected and island mode. In this paper, the generation scheduling of distributed energy resources is implemented by the particle swarm optimization approach for both operation modes. The simulation results show the optimal generation resources management and effective use of demand-side management in the microgrid. This paper presents profits maximization for utility and the increased use of renewable generation in microgrid operation under the optimal generation scheduling and the impacts of demand response. Finally, comparing the cost-benefit of the proposed system for both operation modes.
