The Shenango Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) is owned and operated by Aqua Pennsylvania (Aqua) and obtains raw water from the Shenango River. Treatment at the Shenango Plant currently consists of raw water screening and pumping; intermittent pH/alkalinity adjustment with lime; coagulation with alum; ballasted flocculation with micro-sand, polymer and sedimentation; dual media filtration; clearwell storage; post pH adjustment with lime; phosphate corrosion inhibitor addition; ammonia and fluoride addition; and high lift pumping. Since the plant was constructed in the late 1990s, Aqua has conducted several studies on the performance and operation of the plant and has made adjustments to process components. During one of the studies, it was decided that a pilot study was necessary to verify that Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) would have a beneficial effect on filter run length, to assess whether the DAF could treat high raw water turbidity from the river, and to determine the best filter media configuration for the filters.
