Demand for water has been on the rise as a result of population and development growth. At the same time, an increased occurrence of extreme weather arising from climate change reduces the reliability of water supplies from existing sources. Under the circumstances, water providers across the globe strive to identify sustainable, cost-effective and politically acceptable programs for managing their water resources. Although there is a need to develop more refined global climate models in order to better understand the scale and extent of the effects of climate change, water utilities must adapt to, and mitigate against, these effects using whatever information is currently available. Efforts to deal with these impacts include both water and energy conservation programs such as leak detection and correction, water saving and reuse, and energy-efficient infrastructure and processes.
