Toward the advanced Coal Science -strategic production of fine chemicals

The authors had published a review titled with possibilities of new coal chemistry-feedstocks for carbon fiber and fine chemicals in the journal of Chemistry (KAGAKU) 41, 442 (1986), Kagaku Doujin, JAPAN). Now, due to environmentally less acceptable coal fired power plant, above subjects are attracting much attention in the field of R&D of coal utilization technologies.The authors guided one student to summarize two debates concerning coal structure published in Fuel journals. Then, a unit coal structure model was proposed by him based on the detailed analyses of Solvent Refined Coal ( 95% yield of quinoline soluble portion of Japanese bituminous coal at 420°C for 25min. ). This quinoline soluble product is separated into three categories, HS (hexane soluble), HI-BS (hexane insoluble-benzene soluble) and BI (benzene insoluble). Each fraction is submitted to Curie point pyrolysis (670 °C, 3sec). Each volatile yield is from 30 to 35%, indicating the complicated distribution of aromatic compounds on GC/MS ion chromatogram.
