Anniversary workshop speakers: 25 years of VCSEL research and development at Ulm University and Philips photonics

Karl Joachim Ebeling, born October 1949, received degrees Dipl.-Phys., Dr. rer. nat., and Dr. rer. nat. habil. in Physics all from the University of Go?ttingen, Germany. In 1982 and 1983 he was a Guest Scientist at Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, New Jersey, USA. From 1985 to 1989 he was a Professor of High Frequency Electronics at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. Since 1989 he has been Professor of Optoelectronics and Director of the Microelectronics Technology Center at Ulm University, Germany. From 1995 to 2001 he served as Vice-President Research and from October 2003 to September 2015 as the President of Ulm University. From March 2001 to September 2003 he was Vice-President Corporate Research at Infineon Technologies, Munich, the former semiconductor section of Siemens. Among others, he received the Leibniz Award of the German Science Foundation in 1987, the Karl Heinz Beckurts Award for transfer of research into industry in 1997, and the 2001 MOC Award of the Japanese Society of Applied Physics for his work on vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes. He declined offers from Universities Augsburg, Go?ttingen, Stuttgart, Technical University Berlin, and Research Center Karlsruhe. He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Science and the German National Academy of Science and Engineering acatech. In 2015 he received the Commanders Cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
