Based on finite element models the performances of four permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) with 3-phase, 5-phase, 7-phase and 9-phase stator winding are evaluated in order to compare these PMS motors with the analogues induction motors and to select the better variant related the number of phases. The influence of the PMSM's rotor fault that consists in the decrease of the remnant magnetic flux density of one of the four magnets on the electromagnetic torque and on the rotor unbalanced force is studied.
