Nanoporous carbon can be used as fuel matrix for composite energetic nanomaterials by filling their nanoporous structure with an oxidizing salt. After a first screening based on equilibrium adsorption capacity and oxygen balance, the material resulting from loading sodium perchlorate on a granular activated carbon (Norit C) was investigated. DSC experiments showed a decomposition onset at 320 °C. An ignition temperature of 332 °C was measured and the prepared material reacted very violently. Those results constitute a proof of concept and encourage further investigations on the potentialities of energetic nanomaterials based on nanoporous carbon.
