Project Introduction and Background: Utilities are looking for options to reduce operating costs and to create additional sources of revenue while meeting new energy challenges. To include resource recovery through co-digestion and subsequent energy generation, a traditional method includes mesophilic anaerobic digestion, where wastewater solids (both raw primary and biological treatment or secondary sludges) are consumed by microorganisms at relatively high temperatures (> 95℉). Anaerobic digestion reduces sludge quantities and produces biogas. which can have greater than 60% methane content, and can be used in lieu of natural gas to create heat and electricity.
