This paper proposes a position sensorless synchronous reluctance motor (SyRM) based solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed irrigation pumping system. Here, a single voltage source inverter (VSI) is utilized, which is responsible for the vector control of SyRM as well as extraction of peak power from the PV generator. The angular position and speed of the rotor, are estimated in real time from the motor currents and DC bus voltage signals. This reduces the number of sensors to four (twomotor currents, DC bus voltage and PV current). The incremental conductance algorithm is aided by a speed feedforward term to improve the dynamic performance of the proposed system under varying environmental conditions. Moreover, the control is inherently unaffected to the ageing related variation in pump constant. The suitability of the proposed water pumping system is tested through the experimental results, recorded on a developed prototype in the laboratory, under varying solar insolation.
