Implementation of 5G use cases in the VIBeS test bed

The fifth generation of telecommunication networks is going to be deployed. The European Space Agency (ESA) is investing significant effort and resources to achieve technological concepts and components capable to allow the satellite systems to play the role of an essential component of 5G and not only ancillary. The VIBeS project aims to develop a real time test bed built over a virtual-PEP (vPEP), implemented in compliance of 5G standard in terms of network architecture and function virtualization techniques. The paper provides the description of how the target use cases have been implemented in the VIBeS test bed, and the technology involved in the vPEP to improve on network performance. For each use case, we report the protocols and mechanisms enabled in the vPEP, their configuration and working modes as well as the expected benefits with respect to the benchmark case, in which vPEP is off.
