Analysis of Impact of Space Cooling Demand on the Peak Power Demand of Delhi

The urban regions of India are experiencing significant increase in the power demand. Delhi experiences a very high peak demand during summers. This paper analyzes Delhi's increase in power demand during summer, and the relative impact of cooling demand on it. The analysis shows that peak power demand increased by 26.3% in the past five years from 2015–2019. The paper also analyzes the variation of peak demand with respect to temperature and humidity. It is found that the peak demand during summer is usually above 6000 MW while for the rest of the year the highest demand reaches around 5000 MW. Delhi's energy requirement during summer period is between 3400–3800 MWh and for the remaining months it is between 1900–2400 MWh. The consumer mix of the DISCOMs in Delhi reveals that residential energy consumption constitutes 53% of the total energy sales. The data taken for study can be considered adequate but a large dataset would evidently produce better results.
