This paper presents the preliminary work on smart blocks, a collection of blockchained modules of sensors and actuators for upgrading legacy IoT systems. After deployment, the large number of IoT devices can hardly evolve cooperatively with the changing requirements. Smart blocks enhance existing IoT networks with hardware modules that can be connected together in the field. Besides security, privacy, and transparency, blockchains also add a layer of value exchange on networks.
