HDR Engineering, Inc. assisted Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District (Louisville MSD) with the design of the Rowan Pump Station that will be used to dewater the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) deep tunnel and shaft system also known as Louisville MSD's Waterway Protection Tunnel (WPT). As a part of a Consent Decree, the project is intended to reduce the volume of multiple CSOs that currently discharge to the Ohio River. The pump station is a submersible type station with pumps installed in a 67-meter (220-foot) deep, 12-meter (40-foot) diameter shaft. The WPT is a 6.5-kilometer (4-mile), 6-meter (20-foot) diameter tunnel has an approximate storage capacity of 208,200 cubic meters (55 million gallons) including the vertical shafts. Construction is ongoing, and the system will be operational by the end of 2020. This paper will discuss the design challenges associated with the operation and maintenance of a deep submersible pump station. The 67-meter (220-foot) deep submersible pump station poses unique hydraulic design challenges and other operational issues for submersible pumping equipment that had to be addressed and resolved during the project's design phase. This paper/presentation will describe those design challenges and provide guidance for engineers that may be considering the design of deep submersible pumping systems.
