Using RCM to Build Your Arc Flash Safety and Electrical Preventive Maintenance Program

Arc flash safety is a critical and often underappreciated part of any safety program. Developing an EPM program can dramatically reduce the risk of arc flash. And EPM program developed using RCM has the added benefit of integrating electrical safety and maintenance with system-wide maintenance and asset management strategies. Electrical safety, of which arc flash is a critical component, is not separate from other safety elements. Electrical maintenance, which helps prevent arc flash incidents, is not separate from other maintenance activities. Poorly maintained equipment is more likely to fail, and thus more likely to require electrical repair under duress. RCM, in building a robust maintenance program, also builds electrical maintenance, lockout/tagout and other safety procedures, and reduces the risk of safety hazards.
