Process Benchmarking Drives WWTP Maintenance Optimization within the National Water and Wastewater Benchmarking Initiative: City of Calgary and the Regional District of Nanaimo Demonstrate that Business Process Design Must Precede Technology

This case study highlights how advanced metric benchmarking can be used as a tool to prioritize and initiate detailed process benchmarking. Process benchmarking should be used specifically to guide overall performance improvement. In this case study, process benchmarking was used to improve maintenance management practices within a group of a dozen advanced water and wastewater utilities within the National Water and Wastewater Benchmarking Initiative in Canada. This technical paper describes how the process benchmarking was undertaken and displays some of the results through case studies from the City of Calgary and the Regional District of Nanaimo.
