The City of Los Angeles has been constructing dry weather diversion projects throughout the City for the past several years. The purpose of the program has been to divert dry weather urban runoff from streams and beaches to improve water quality at the beaches during the dry summer months when the beaches are frequented most heavily. Since inception, the City has constructed numerous diversions, resulting in a substantial amount of all dry weather flows being diverted from beaches. Beach bacteria counts have been observed to be decreasing since the inception of the program suggesting that dry weather diversions are an effective means to improve beach water quality. Data from the waste water treatment works and collection system also suggests that there have been no adverse impacts to the treatment works or collection system from this dry weather flow. This paper will present data from beach water quality, data from the Hyperion treatment plant, and data from the collection system that shows these conclusions. Dry weather diversions can be a very effective tool for improving beach water quality.
