From the Speckle Interferometer to Digital Holography

This paper describes work I have done in the area of speckle metrology. This began with the redesign in 1969 of the speckle interferometer invented at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK, and culminated in the development of a real-time digital holography system in 1989. Along the way, I developed a system for heterodyne readout of halo fringes in speckle photography that made it practical for two-dimensional strain measurement at high temperatures. My most recent contributions have been the illustration of digital holography with a speckled reference beam and what may be called transverse digital holography, a technique that derives from one of the first speckle interferometry configurations.
