In order to detect the sub-synchronous oscillation(SSO) in power systems rapidly and accurately, a novel test method based on sample entropy(SEn) is presented in this paper. By analyzing the variation trend of SEn value of the rotor shafting torque in continuous time period, the complexity of the original signal during different time window could be acquired to judge whether SSO occurs and what kind of SSO has happened in the system. This method has better anti-noise ability and real time property while it does not need large sets of data. Simulation results of the IEEE first standard model test system verified the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.
