The Nan’ao Multi-Terminal Flexible HVDC demonstration project is the world’s first multi-terminal flexible HVDC system. The fault current interruption of the DC system is more difficult than that of the AC system. Therefore, to design a reliable DC circuit breaker is one of the key issue of improving the stability and reliability of the DC system power supply. In this study, the principle, application and design parameters of a 160kV mechanical DC circuit breaker in the Nan’ao project was introduced.
