When we are looking at the shipping sector future the discussion group agreed that these must be considered with an uncertain CO2 regulatory framework, with serious carbon caps or decarbonisation language included in upcoming COP deliberations. Also, the size of vessels, levels of future trade and the scale of infrastructure inertia from existing investments and the ‘buy in’ for new fuels (i.e. LNG). The general view of the discussion group is that rather a single, dominant alternative fuel or means of propulsion as we have seen over the last 70 years, that instead we will have a future with a mixture of propulsion and energy systems, hybrid vessels, for different types and sizes of ship and application. Fuel security and providing stable costs for systems will be important concerns.
