Quality is one of most important issues in the production of high-tech industries. This study explores the quality inspection problem for a color filter production system in order to determine the best inspection policy of quality characteristics for the system. The color filter production system involved in this study has 7 workstations and 2-3 quality characteristics at each workstation. A profit model is developed, which consists of four kinds of costs, namely, manufacturing processing costs, quality inspection costs, internal failure costs and external failure cost. The treatment of non-conforming products in the color filter production consists of repair, rework and scrap. In addition to the complete enumeration method, this study uses a genetic algorithm to find the optimal solution for the practical production system. The results show that the genetic algorithm can also obtain the optimal solution as the complete enumeration method; but at the same time it obtains the quicker solution. We believe that the results of this study can serve as a reference of determining the inspection allocation policy for color filter production plant in order to promote higher profit.
